Feb 9 Update: Click here for the most complete guide to jailbreak firmware 1.1.3.

firmwares098.png
Apple posted today a new firmware 1.1.3 for iPod touch. The update shows up in iTunes (version 7.5). Apple also posted updates to iTunes, now version 7.6.

Needless to say, running the firmware update will restore your jailbroken iPod touch to factory original condition. Third party apps will not run, until a new jailbreak hack is made available.

So in the mean time, do not upgrade to the new firmware. In fact, I wouldn’t even upgrade iTunes to 7.6 as a comment left by a user seems to indicate new functionality — there’s apparently a “Recovery” button in iTunes 7.6.

Stay tunes for more info ….

Meanwhile, I hope you already have safe keep a copy of the version 1.1.2 firmware.

Misc notes:

The copy of iTunes in Leopard Install DVD (/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/iTunes.pkg) is version 7.4.2

iTunes 7.5 for Mac OS X is still available here. Oops! They have removed 7.5 and made available 7.6 only. I found a new source. Grab it quick.

like i said on your other page, i did an upgrade of itunes to 7.6, but not my ipod touch, so i’m still at 1.1.2
and i found where to get the ipod touch firmware 1.1.2 it’s 158 mb.
so i guess we’ll have to wait for someone to upgrade to 1.1.3 and see if it still work after jailbreaking with the 1.1.2 jailbreak version

lolll, the reason why all the upgrades… it’s because you can get all the apps from iphone (mail, google maps, stocks, weater, notes and more..) from itunes (the january software upgrade) for $19,99 or it comes built in in all the new ipod touch….. damn just got mine today at wallmart, but guess what, back to walmart tomorrow, refund, and going to get the new version at apple store here!

all the infos here are great, i’ll be back for sure!

Grin Bob. I’ve done the upgrade and it’s clear that’s a bad idea!

Yah, go get a refund and buy the “new” iPod touch from the online store. At least you won’t need to pay for the new Apps.

Of course, that also means you can’t play with 3rd part apps that jailbroken one can. But hey, it’s only a matter of time before that’s possible.

    Cheers Bob!

Pablo, go to your Finder and under the “Go” menu, select “Go to Folder …”, then copy and paste the following into it.

    ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/

    The firmware is in there.

Just to shed some light on what I’ve tried.
I accidentally upgraded my iPod Touch to 1.1.3 and lost all jailbreaking capability.

Attempts to downgrade to 1.1.2 has failed so far. I’ve tried with a backed up version of the 1.1.2 restore firmware and the one from the ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ folder. Both to no avail.

I did it through iTunes 7.5 not 7.6. I am disappointed but however it is just a matter of time before it is possible again.

Those who updated to 1.1.3 and cannot downgrade anymore should try to restore using iTunes 7.4.2 (which comes in the Leopard installation DVD). It will probably restore to 1.1.1. If it succeeds, then you can upgrade again to jailbroken 1.1.2 using know methods (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=212346).
Please let us know if it works.

I upgraded to 1.1.3, and unlike most people, I am glad I did. Maps and mail now work like they are supposed to, with nothing to mess around with, and the update also fixed a few bugs I had that caused my music and safari apps to crash every once in a while. I think it will be enough functionality for me until the sdk comes out next month. Then we will get some nice, polished apps that are kosher with apple.

my roomate and i were working on the 1.1.3 jailbreak today. its impossible. the firmware 1.1.3 has a special coding which makes it impossible to change its technical features which means no 3rd party apps. I talked to my cousin (who works for apple) and he said they are loosing money because of jailbreak. (stock went down $11 usd). Conceited software or w/e is supposedly very close to figuring out how to make the “impossible” possible. i reccomend you upgrade to 1.1.3 and buy the $19.99 app software. 1.1.3 is faster better.

    3. If you allready upgraded ur device

downgrade, but not to install 3rd
party apps or use the iphone as
    “phone”

    4. We r all looking forward to a evl.

Downgrade to 1.1.1 with full fuctionality is possible for the iPod touch only. You can downgrade to 1.1.1 on the iPhone but you’ll get a unknown Sim error and thus you will not be able to make calls until you re-upgrade back to 1.1.3. So good news for iPod touch, but us iPhone users will have to wait a little longer until an offical jailbreak is available. Hopefully we will not have to wait until 1.1.4, because they have changed the baseband, ergg. Apple likes making things difficult. So cross your fingers. You can see how the downgrade is done on http://www.ipodtouchmaster.com

hey i would like to advice the way to downgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 .
U should use firefox to use to download the restore firmware, because i tried it and now i’m so happy to use my jailbroken ipod touch.
I also accidentally upgrade my ipod to 1.1.3 and i download the restore firwareby using opera, but i can’t restore.
it shows the file size as in the host but it is not useful.
    So download by using mozilla,
Have a nice time with ur Ipod

  6. Hi, is there any difference is ipodTouch upgraded from 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 and stock ipod with 1.1.3 - i am interested especially in this with stock 1.1.3 - is is downgradable the same way as the ones upgraded from earlier versions??

    • RupertGee
    • Posted 18 February 2008 at 20:20
    • Permalink

    @Kuba Tyszko

There’s no difference between them, Kuba. In fact, prior to the ZiPhone method, all iPod touch, regardless of its original firmware versions, has to be downgraded to 1.1.1 to start with. The only advantage of a stock 1.1.3 is the pre-loaded iPhone apps. But once you jailbreak that stock 1.1.3 iPod touch, they are gone (athough you’ll get them back).

  7. Thanks for the reply, i went through all the process and everything is okay.
    Problems/discrepancies i encountered are:

    1) it takes precision when entering DFU mode and it has to be black screen not picture to avoid unknown error (1).

    2) Copying 1.1.3 update file over ssh doesn’t help because installer now puts update under different path, doesn’t use -c as wget option, and changes downloaded file name to “something”.zip

Besides two of those things everything went seamless.
The bad thing about having JB 1.1.3 is that most of applications don’t work. (some of them don’t even show in installer after installation).

  8. Ah - forgot to mention, my ipod is newest 32GB Touch bought in Japan with stock 1.1.3. (i was a bit unsure whether they changed anything adding more memory that could break downgrading possibility but it seems HW is perfectly the same and nothing except bigger flash has changed ).

    @Kuba Tyszko

    Glad you made it.

Wow, you even know about wget. Then it’s not difficult for you to fix apps that don’t work in 1.1.3. Briefly, Apple changed the user from root to mobile. Thus many imcompatible apps were expecting

    /var/root/

and can’t find it since it’s now

    /var/mobile/

Knowing that, you can trick some apps by making a symbolic link to the new user account and they’ll work.

    wink.

  9. Hi, my issue apparently was not problem with applications - it was lack of disk space, after treating ipod with boss tool, i freed a lot of it, and now all apps work well.

    @Chris:

Not at all! In fact, half of the comments on this site are about jailbreaking 1.1.3. It’s entirely possible- just look around this blog!
