Feb 9 Update: Click here for the most complete guide to jailbreak firmware 1.1.3.

firmwares098.png
Apple posted today a new firmware 1.1.3 for iPod touch. The update shows up in iTunes (version 7.5). Apple also posted updates to iTunes, now version 7.6.

Needless to say, running the firmware update will restore your jailbroken iPod touch to factory original condition. Third party apps will not run, until a new jailbreak hack is made available.

So in the mean time, do not upgrade to the new firmware. In fact, I wouldn’t even upgrade iTunes to 7.6 as a comment left by a user seems to indicate new functionality — there’s apparently a “Recovery” button in iTunes 7.6.

Stay tunes for more info ….

Meanwhile, I hope you already have safe keep a copy of the version 1.1.2 firmware.

Misc notes:

The copy of iTunes in Leopard Install DVD (/Volumes/Mac OS X Install DVD/System/Installation/Packages/iTunes.pkg) is version 7.4.2

iTunes 7.5 for Mac OS X is still available here. Oops! They have removed 7.5 and made available 7.6 only. I found a new source. Grab it quick.

  1. Rupert,

would you mind sending me a copy of the 1.1.2 firmware please?

  2. Hey Alex, look for it in your OS X. It will be there so long as you have not upgraded to 1.1.3.

    I don’t forward software. 😦

  3. hey ALex did u find a cope of 1.1.2 firware??? cause i already upgraded to 1.1.3 and cant find a wya to get back???? could u e0mai me it??? hpo42-@hotmail.com pleaseee

  4. like i said on your other page, i did an upgrade of itunes to 7.6, but not my ipod touch, so i’m still at 1.1.2
and i found where to get the ipod touch firmware 1.1.2 it’s 158 mb.
so i guess we’ll have to wait for someone to upgrade to 1.1.3 and see if it still work after jailbreaking with the 1.1.2 jailbreak version

  5. lolll, the reason why all the upgrades… it’s because you can get all the apps from iphone (mail, google maps, stocks, weater, notes and more..) from itunes (the january software upgrade) for $19,99 or it comes built in in all the new ipod touch….. damn just got mine today at wallmart, but guess what, back to walmart tomorrow, refund, and going to get the new version at apple store here!

all the infos here are great, i’ll be back for sure!

  6. Grin Bob. I’ve done the upgrade and it’s clear that’s a bad idea!

Yah, go get a refund and buy the “new” iPod touch from the online store. At least you won’t need to pay for the new Apps.

Of course, that also means you can’t play with 3rd part apps that jailbroken one can. But hey, it’s only a matter of time before that’s possible.

    Cheers Bob!

  7. nice to read this i have my itunes 7.5 fiu and my ipod 1.1.2 but where exactly is the package of the firmwire 1.1.2 on my mac os?

  8. Pablo, go to your Finder and under the “Go” menu, select “Go to Folder …”, then copy and paste the following into it.

    ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/

    The firmware is in there.

  9. New File, thats the point once you upgrade Apple found a way to keep you from downgrading.

  10. Just to shed some light on what I’ve tried.
I accidentally upgraded my iPod Touch to 1.1.3 and lost all jailbreaking capability.

Attempts to downgrade to 1.1.2 has failed so far. I’ve tried with a backed up version of the 1.1.2 restore firmware and the one from the ~/Library/iTunes/iPod Software Updates/ folder. Both to no avail.

I did it through iTunes 7.5 not 7.6. I am disappointed but however it is just a matter of time before it is possible again.

  11. Those who updated to 1.1.3 and cannot downgrade anymore should try to restore using iTunes 7.4.2 (which comes in the Leopard installation DVD). It will probably restore to 1.1.1. If it succeeds, then you can upgrade again to jailbroken 1.1.2 using know methods (http://forums.ilounge.com/showthread.php?t=212346).
Please let us know if it works.

  12. I upgraded to 1.1.3, and unlike most people, I am glad I did. Maps and mail now work like they are supposed to, with nothing to mess around with, and the update also fixed a few bugs I had that caused my music and safari apps to crash every once in a while. I think it will be enough functionality for me until the sdk comes out next month. Then we will get some nice, polished apps that are kosher with apple.

  13. plus, some of the new features in the 1.1.3 apps are very useful.

  14. i also upgraded my ipod accidentally
please, someone find a way to jailbreak 1.1.3
    im lost without it =(

  15. I also accidently upgraded my iPod Touch. I just finished talking to a Apple Care Representative so there is no legit way of downgrading. So hopefully someone will fix it and make it possible again.

  16. hey, i jailbroke my ipod, but then restored it on itunes. Is it safe for me to use this upgrade(1.1.3)…or will it brick my touch?

  17. Just found this comment in another blog, give it a try – this might make it possible for you to downgrade to 1.1.2 and more again:

    AdamLuka said…
Hold home and reset button for 10 sec then release reset button but hold home button for next 10 sec.. be precise, than u can downgrade to 1.1.2
just did it and am glad..

  18. he guys i tryd downgrading from 1.1.3 To 1.1.2 or 1.1.1 is a nono
so we’ll just have to wait fot the 1.1.3 jailbreak i guess

  19. Here is the 1.1.2 firmware…..

  20. Question for you: I’m on 1.1.2 on my iTouch and cannot figure out how to jailbreak it. I’ve been trying for weeks to no avail. And I can’t seem to get 1.1.1 anywhere either.

    Can someone help me pleaseeeee?

  21. you could downgrade 1.1.3 I have done it before

  22. my roomate and i were working on the 1.1.3 jailbreak today. its impossible. the firmware 1.1.3 has a special coding which makes it impossible to change its technical features which means no 3rd party apps. I talked to my cousin (who works for apple) and he said they are loosing money because of jailbreak. (stock went down $11 usd). Conceited software or w/e is supposedly very close to figuring out how to make the “impossible” possible. i reccomend you upgrade to 1.1.3 and buy the $19.99 app software. 1.1.3 is faster better.

  23. What is “SDK” that comes out next month?

  24. tutto, I tried iTunes 7.4.2. It doesn’t work too.

  25. js609163, you’re reading the wrong post. Here you go for the right one.

Let’s Jailbreak the iPod touch 1.1.2 with OS X

  26. Chuck, SDK stands for software development kit. Basically it’s a programming package that makes writing apps easier.

  27. Hi,

Is the procedure for the Apple Iphone the same?

    Thanks.

  28. there is now a way to downgrade 1.1.3 in your Itunes 7.X
go and look it up on youtube

  29. hello? 🙂

  30. 😦 im confused!

  31. can i jailbreak my iPod Touch if i already upgraded to the 1.1.3 version and the 7.6 iTunes if i have never did this before??

  32. @KingCOmbat Just downgrade to 1.1.2. I don’t know how well it will work with the new iTunes though (but you can downgrade that too).

Here’s a good video on jailbreaking your iPod: http://youtube.com/watch?v=TXfcnO4kjB4&feature=related

Get the 1.1.2 firmware from the link in the video description.

  33. Cami, I know it’s a little confusing, but you’re on what’s called “the internet”. It’s a collection of interconnected computers that can exchange data across the country and across the globe.

  34. I just bought the new apps. Is well worth it. I was mad about having to pay but oh well. I am anious to see if 3 is breakable.

  35. I jailbroke my 1.1.3 ipod touch using this tutorial:

It worked, and it was quite easy, and I’m very bad at using computers, so it can’t be that hard

  36. conclusion …

I hope i understand this in the way right

    1. Firmware 1.1.3 is not jailbreakable
    ipod or iphone

    2. Anysim or other progs wont work on
    iphone (evl. turbosim ect.)

    3. If you allready upgraded ur device
to 1.1.3, u will be able to
downgrade, but not to install 3rd
party apps or use the iphone as
    “phone”

    4. We r all looking forward to a evl.
release of a official SDK from
apple, or a genius who fucks the
    shit out of 1.1.3 ^^

am i right so far `?

  37. Try this link for iTunes 7.5

    http://www.soft82.com/download/windows/itunes/

  38. Downgrade to 1.1.1 with full fuctionality is possible for the iPod touch only. You can downgrade to 1.1.1 on the iPhone but you’ll get a unknown Sim error and thus you will not be able to make calls until you re-upgrade back to 1.1.3. So good news for iPod touch, but us iPhone users will have to wait a little longer until an offical jailbreak is available. Hopefully we will not have to wait until 1.1.4, because they have changed the baseband, ergg. Apple likes making things difficult. So cross your fingers. You can see how the downgrade is done on http://www.ipodtouchmaster.com

  39. Hi Rupert:
My jailbroken iPod has 1.1.1 firmware. Is there any way to move to 1.1.3 without losing the ability to install new apps.?
I would like to get some of the new functionality offered by 1.1.3.
    Peter

  40. Hi roksob

The answer is yes and no. Find out more about it in the following post:

  44. rupert,
I have just today updatedy iPod touch to version 1.1.3 and I was wondering if I could jailbreak it with that version WITHOUT breaking my iPod. I was also wondering how to do it. Let me know.

  45. Sultan and everyone else having problem downgrading/jailbreaking to 1.1.2, you’ll want to jailbreak all the way to version 1.1.3 now.

    Details below!

    https://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2008/01/26/jailbreak-ipod-touch-113/

  46. i updated my ipod to 1.1.3 and i think u also updated itunes,
is there any way of downgrading the ipod to firmware 1.1.1 because i tried already and its not working

    🙂

  48. could i still do it with itunes 7.6?

  49. oh and the link u gave me RupertGee is for mac users

  50. Let me start by introducing myself. I am a n00b. I currently have an Ipod Touch 1.1.3 (With Software Upgrades. I had purchased the software upgrade before learning of a technique know as Jailbreaking. I am very tempted to Jailbreak my Ipod Touch but am also very hesitant. What are the risk? Should I wait? What are the advantages to waiting? Obviously I do not wish to destroy my Ipod Touch and am asking for any assisstance in Jailbreaking it successfully. Thank you for your time.

  51. Sorry DLG123 but we are mostly Mac users here. Anyways have you tried the method that does not even require a computer?

Let’s Jailbreak the iPod touch 1.1.3 without a Computer

  52. Hi n00b jon!

I suggest you wait. As of now, there’s no known method to keep your purchased apps after jailbreaking. Some users even reported they can get the apps back after they un-jailbreak.

  53. it doesnt wana run this
says no applcations can run it

  54. I sure hope That SDK wil not cost money. Besides, It’s Almost febuary…

  55. “It” refers to what, jpepp?

  56. Me too, Pat… but then it shouldn’t. Nobody actually sells SDK. It’s meant for software developers to write apps. They then decide to release it as freeware or share (to recover the costs of SDK.)

  62. Hey Everyone,

Just want to remind you that Apple are about to release a Software Developers Kit for the iPod Touch (late February) and this will allow you to (legally by Apples warranty rules) add apps to your iPod touch without jailbreaking it. Apple support this fully.

    Sam

    http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=30044

  73. @bo bo

The following is a no compromise far superior method.

Let’s Jailbreak the iPod touch with the OFFICIAL Dev Teams GUI Method

  74. hey i would like to advice the way to downgrade from 1.1.3 to 1.1.1 .
U should use firefox to use to download the restore firmware, because i tried it and now i’m so happy to use my jailbroken ipod touch.
I also accidentally upgrade my ipod to 1.1.3 and i download the restore firwareby using opera, but i can’t restore.
it shows the file size as in the host but it is not useful.
    So download by using mozilla,
Have a nice time with ur Ipod

  75. Hi, is there any difference is ipodTouch upgraded from 1.1.1 or 1.1.2 to 1.1.3 and stock ipod with 1.1.3 – i am interested especially in this with stock 1.1.3 – is is downgradable the same way as the ones upgraded from earlier versions??

  76. @Kuba Tyszko

There’s no difference between them, Kuba. In fact, prior to the ZiPhone method, all iPod touch, regardless of its original firmware versions, has to be downgraded to 1.1.1 to start with. The only advantage of a stock 1.1.3 is the pre-loaded iPhone apps. But once you jailbreak that stock 1.1.3 iPod touch, they are gone (athough you’ll get them back).

  77. Thanks for the reply, i went through all the process and everything is okay.
    Problems/discrepancies i encountered are:

    1) it takes precision when entering DFU mode and it has to be black screen not picture to avoid unknown error (1).

    2) Copying 1.1.3 update file over ssh doesn’t help because installer now puts update under different path, doesn’t use -c as wget option, and changes downloaded file name to “something”.zip

Besides two of those things everything went seamless.
The bad thing about having JB 1.1.3 is that most of applications don’t work. (some of them don’t even show in installer after installation).

  78. Ah – forgot to mention, my ipod is newest 32GB Touch bought in Japan with stock 1.1.3. (i was a bit unsure whether they changed anything adding more memory that could break downgrading possibility but it seems HW is perfectly the same and nothing except bigger flash has changed ).

  79. @Kuba Tyszko

    Glad you made it.

Wow, you even know about wget. Then it’s not difficult for you to fix apps that don’t work in 1.1.3. Briefly, Apple changed the user from root to mobile. Thus many imcompatible apps were expecting

    /var/root/

and can’t find it since it’s now

    /var/mobile/

Knowing that, you can trick some apps by making a symbolic link to the new user account and they’ll work.

    wink.

  80. Hi, my issue apparently was not problem with applications – it was lack of disk space, after treating ipod with boss tool, i freed a lot of it, and now all apps work well.

  81. I just got an ipod touch 1.1.3 last week, from what i am hearing i cannot jailbreak it or add the installer app to download games and such… is that true? Is Mac going to come up with games for ipod touch soon?

  82. @Chris:

Not at all! In fact, half of the comments on this site are about jailbreaking 1.1.3. It’s entirely possible- just look around this blog!

  83. hey !
could you please send me the link so that i can download 1.1.3 ?
    thanks

  84. Jack, if you’re on a Mac you find it by: Home>Library>iTunes
