The Gee theme for Summerboard is designed with one aim in mind; to show off the iPod touch in a manly way using dark metallic material as if it’s built for tough handling. Your iPod touch no longer looks out of place in your jeans or tuxedo.

SummerBoard, an excellent Theme app, is required. You can install it via the Installer. After installation, you’ll find the “SMBPrefs” app in your Springboard to set your preferences, and choose your Theme.

The Gee Theme is not yet available at any repository, so you’ll have to download and install it manually. Here’s how:

  1. Download this zip file (508.6 KB) to your Mac.
  2. Unzip the archive.
  3. Upload the entire “Gee (iPod touch)” folder to your iPod touch’s either one of the following folder depending on your firmware version:
    • Firmware Ver 1.1.1 & 1.1.2
      /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/  camera.gif
    • Firmware 1.1.3
      /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/
  4. Launch “SMBpref” and turn ON camera.gif the following options:
    • Theme Wallpaper – ON
    • Theme Status Bar – ON
    • Theme Icons – ON
    • Theme Dock – ON
    • Wallpaper – ON
    • Skip Last Row – ON (for firmware 1.1.1 & 1.1.2 only)
  5. Look for the Gee Theme under “Themes”, and select it.
  6. Tap “Restart Springboard”.
  7. 6965854.jpg

  8. Included in the zip are 8 Wallpapers. They are for the Unlock Screen.
    • Mac Users: Import them to your Mac’s iPhoto.app, and launch iSync iTunes to sync them to your iPod touch. After that, tap on Settings -> General -> Wallpaper -> Select your choice -> Tap “Set Wallpaper”, and you’re done.
    • Windows Users: Buy a Mac.

FAQs:

  • Will it work on an iPhone? I seriously don’t know as Apple isn’t selling the Jesus phone in Singapore. However, I suspect it should, except it’ll confuse your friend into taking it’s an iPod touch. Maybe I’ll make one for iPhone. Maybe.
  • How to make a baby? Illustrated answer.
  • Can I make you a cash donation for your effort? I find it hard to believe that’s a FAQ! Thanks for the thought though.

Jan 9 Update: Wallpaper for iPhone

iphone-badge.png
By request I’m making available a special iPhone badged Wallpaper for use with the mothership. Unfortunately I don’t have the Jesus Phone. I’m sure it’s a great phone but I need a mobile phone with a very good camera; at the very least it gotta know how to auto-focus. What that means is I can’t test the Theme on it. Feel free to let me know if the Wallpaper fits, and I certainly welcome suggestions on how to improve it.

To use the Theme on an iPhone, download this special Wallpaper.png and replace it with the one in the zip file.

Jan 22 Update: Battery Images

A matching Battery Image for the Unlock Screen is now available. It is an optional install; you do not need it for the Gee Theme to work but it’ll be nicer. On the other hand, you can install it for use with the default iPod touch or other themes as well.

There are two ways to install it.

Install directly into Springboard:

  • Download this zip, and copy (and overwrite) all 17 .png files into /System/Library/Core Services/Springboard.app
  • It’s not a bad idea to backup the original files first.

Install via Customize:

  • Download this zip, and copy the whole “Gee Theme” folder into /Library/Customize/BatteryImages
  • Launch Customize, tap on “Battery Image”, select the Gee Battery, and exit Customize.

To see the screen, your iPod touch must be charging via the USB Cable.

Feb 5, 2008 Update: The Update Pack

When Apple released the version 1.1.3 firmware update, everyone is very impressed by the new-look Dock which spots a perforated metal mesh background. It reminds me of the ultimate Mac money can buy — the Mac Pro.

So I updated the Gee Theme with a perforated polished stainless-steel mesh in order to show off the iPod touch runs on the latest firmware. Yes, that’s right; polished aluminium! I gotta one-up Apple on the cool factor. When you tilt and swivel your iPod touch back and fore, the perforated Dock seemingly catches rainbow rays of lights that shimmer – a distinctive characteristic of polished brushed aluminium. 🙂

Three designs are available and included in the Update Pack. There’s one with a fully perforated background, while the other two have a perforated Dock. A departure from the usual Gee Theme, there’s one design for those of you who might not want to “skip the last row.” The famous iPod touch badge is thus smaller in size to accomodate a full house of icons on the Springboard. For the two “skip last row” designs, I’ve added a small badge to show off I’m proud that our iPod touch are Jailbroken!

To install the Update Pack:

  • You must already installed the original Gee Theme.
  • Download and unzip the correct zip file depending on your firmware version:
    • For firmware version 1.1.3 – Download
    • For firmware versions 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 – Download
  • Select the design you like best, and rename it to “Wallpaper.png”. The filename is cAsE sensitive.
  • Upload and replace it with the copy in the “Gee Theme (iPod touch)” folder.
  • Launch SummerBoard’s SMBPrefs, scroll-down and tap on the “Restart Springboard” button. The new background will appear shortly after.

Feb 9, 2008 Update: No Docked Icons

Hey it looks pretty cool without any docked icons. Just wiggle away (firmware 1.1.3 only) the docked icons.

Feel free to leave your comments.

Revisions:

  • Jan 2, 2008 Version 1.1 – Added 4 new Wallpapers and more custom icons. Revised some icons for placement in the Dock to give the iPod touch a more Mac OS X look and feel.
  • Feb 6, 2008 Version 1.2 – Widen the Status Bar to support 12-hour Time format.

  1. Cool!

    I love it. It’s business-like.

    Merry X’mas to you!

  2. I LOVE IT. THANKS.

  3. Nice. But how did you re-arrange the icon? I can’t find any option in Summerboard to do that.

  4. Hi Jimmy

You can re-order your icons by using Customize. It also lets you change the number of icons on the Dock, among other customization.

  5. Hey uncle Rupert, Vans from hwz here. Great theme. Using it right now!

  6. Hi Vans! Glad you like it. I hope to make an ang-gong-gong version for Chinese New Year. 🙂

  7. is this available only for mac os x users?

  8. whoops….never mind….i figured out my problem, sorry about that…

  9. Hey Rupert: Do you have a post on how to upload to the iPod?

    Peter

  10. Peter, read this. 🙂

  11. Theme is cross-platform. 🙂

  12. You rock, Rupert!

  13. Rupert: Outstanding post on mounting the Touch as a thumb drive. Thank you. Yes… I do love OS X. You mentioned advice on moving the Applications folder. I am starting to get “low drive space warnings” and think that I need to do just that.

    Peter

  14. Peter, this one’s for you.

    Cheers!

  15. Again, I thank you. Such a simple fix. How do you find this stuff?
My pod used to be good … now it is just amazing.

  16. my layout looks nothing like the one at the top of the screen
its just an ipod wallpaper and all my apps
    what did i do wrong?

  17. Nothing’s wrong, Jordan. You can re-order your icons by using Customize. It also lets you change the number of icons on the Dock, among other customization.

  18. its not the icons its the background my background just looks like one of the stock ipod photos

  19. You are very observant. You saw the updated theme which I have only just posted. Click on the download links and enjoy the new version.

  20. How can I add the row of icons that was in place of the iPod Touch name on the summerboard? Thanks

  21. Nevermind! Just turned off the “Skip Last Row” option on summerboard!

  22. Yo Rupert! Your theme is mentioned here.

    http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=22391

And somebody asking for an iPhone version. Can you do it?

  23. Hey Rupert,
The stuff you’re putting out with this blog is pure gold! I tip my hat to you…
Everything else worked fine but I can’t seem to get the 8 wallpapers into my iPod as iSync keeps looking for bluetooth when I try to add the iPod as a new device? I’m probably missing something totally obvious.
Anyway, any other instruction or an alternate method?
    Thx – Scotty

  24. Thanks for the pointer, Allan. I’ve made the wallpaper for iPhone. 😛 Peace of cake.

  25. Hi Rupert.
Am I missing something here… I tried using iSync to load the wallpaper’s but the iPod Touch isn’t recognized as it’s looking for a bluetooth connection.
Can you elaborate on this for me Rupert?
    Thanks.

  26. Hi Scotty!

iSync? iSync has absolutely nothing to do with our iPod touch. All syncing are done in iTunes only.

Fire up your iTunes with your iPod connected. Look closely and you’ll see a “Photos” tab. That’s where you tell iTunes which photo albums from your iPhoto Library it should sync to your iPod touch. That means to say you must first import the 8 wallpapers into your iPhoto Library. After that you can select them in iTunes to sync over to your iPod touch.

By the way, you can also sync your Address Book and iCal entries via the last tab, “Info“.

… and we thought iTunes’ only good for music and videos. 🙂

  27. Thanks for clarifying Rupert. That’s what I thought…
The first bullet in point #7 is confusing, you may want to drop the reference to iSync.
    Cheers!

  28. OMG OMG. My face is so red now. Sorry for misleading everyone over using iSync to sync the wallpaper. What was I thinking!?

Thanks Scotty for pointing out the error. I’ve edited it.

    😛

  29. hi rupert i was thinking make a theme for my ipod am suding graphic design and i will like make something special but, i dont know what i need can you help me?
am going to ask other things i have a few questions fo i have to ask in the respective post?

  30. Hi Pablo, I suggest you look in my theme and modify the files to your own design. That’s the quickest way to ick up on how to make your own. Feel free to ask me questions although a forum like iPod Fan Club is probably a better place for that.

  31. thank you ill try

  32. rupert one thing about the theme my ipod says the hour and then pm or am and the lines you put on that looks very small ddoesnt look so nice like the picture and the werid thing is when i am listening my music and turn the ipod left or rihgt the lines of the clock appear to the left of the hour i hope this only happen to me thank you

  33. Hi Pablo, thanks for pointing out the clock being small. I overlooked international clock setting. Myself I use the 24 hours clock, and that does not show am/pm.

The other problem with the clock while in video mode. It’s an oddity I haven’t found a solution yet. In the mean time, if you’re bothered by it, what you can do is delete “StatusBar.png” from the theme’s folder. I hope to find a way around this soon.

  34. Ok… so i jailbroke my ipod using your jailbreak and it worked great!!! But now i am trying to upload your theme but my ipod folder doesnt show up in “my computer”… do you know how to fix this? thank you

  35. “My Computer”? Sounds like yours is a PC? I don’t think the iPod folder will show up in Explorer. You’ll have to follow Customize’s instructions on how to get the Theme in as I don’t know much about Windows.

  36. @mike:remember to install openSSH via installer.app, then ssh in or use t-pot
    http://code.google.com/p/t-pot/
if you’re going the ssh way, root for username and alpine for pass(1.1.2)dotty for 1.1.1.
I thought for a moment that the themes were in some godforsaken format like .dmg or some other mac only format when I saw “buy a mac”. Glad to see that its cross platform ;). (Although I have a Pro, its stock GeForce 7300 is supplemented by 2 AMD Radeon 3780 and Mac OS has the least amount of space that Boot Camp would let me have allocated, with the space going to XP and Ubuntu)

  37. Alright… i downloaded openSSH in the installer.app… how do i get to it? there is no icon and when i plug it into my computer it still doesnt show up in my computer. please help me… i am so confused. thank you

  38. Mike, what you need now is a sFTP client to connect from your PC to your iPod touch.

Regrefully I don’t know which sFTP client is good for Windows, but here’s a page that tells you more about sFTP and suitable clients. I googled and here’s one of the many free graphical sFTP client for Windows that should work. Try it. sFTP/SSH is an important way to install 3rd party apps for the iPod touch.

  39. Are you going to make tha theme availibe through Installer.app?

  40. Yo Nick. I intend to but still haven’t got the time to find out exactly how to do it. 😦

  41. i figured it out… thank you for all your help

  42. Is is possible to install that theme using SSH?

  43. Oh yes you certainly can use SSH to install the theme, but I don’t know how as the AFPd method is so easy.

  44. Theme is awesome, thanks for the great theme as well as the easy instructions on the AFPd.

  45. wheree is my ipod folder i cant find it !!! and i dont uderstand this var/root … thing please help im on a mac

  46. 謝謝拉 終於可以看到電池的% 哈哈

  47. hey rupert, i uploaded the folder and it the theme appears in springboard, however when i go back to my home screen, my wallpaper from when i turn my ipod to sleep is there instead of the gee wallpaper, what do i do?

  48. hey rupert,is can we get from summerboard in installer

  49. Can you make this accessible to 1.1.3 ipods by directly replacing system images?

  50. BTW Rupert, great job with the skin. I especially love the battery meter. It looks great, although I don’t use the dancer wallpapers (I haven’t drunk the kool-aid, in my mind I still own a Sansa e250 :))
Oh, and theo, welcome to the world of AFPd:https://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2007/12/29/mount-ipod-thumb/

  51. @Jake…the image is only visible when your iPod is plugged in.

  52. Thanks Vanya. 🙂

  53. Will, it should be possible but I haven’t got the time to look into it. Nevertheless, I’m sure NullRiver is working hard on an updated SummerBoard so… hang in there; I miss my Gee Theme too. 😦

  54. how do u upload the files to the ipod touch?? do u use cuteFTP??

  55. Hey. This probably is a really stupid question, but how do I get to my ipod’s folder with the whole /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/ thing in it..

  56. hello, (comment above: download winSCP, then go onto http://www.ipodtouchfans.com and search for “noob guide for SSH”)

this is a brilliant theme! brilliant for showing off your ipod. ive found a way to get the wallpapers onto your ipod. its kinda simple. just go into the folder u download, extract, then wallpapers. save all of them to a picture file so u can add the photos via itunes. u will have to go into photos then add wallpaper, but the result is better 😀

  57. Just installed your wonderful theme with the updated version of summerboard on 1.1.3 and just wanted to let everyone know that the path to install themes has changed from /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/ to /var/mobile/library/summerboard/themes

    Thanks

  58. Hey Rupert.

Your wonderful theme has been serving me well for about a month now. However, last night I installed 1.1.3 and jailbroke it. Now, I don’t know if this is a badness in 1.1.3 or the new Summerboard, but the “Skip Last Row” option seems to be noticeably missing, making the applicability of the Gee Theme a bit lessened. Can you think of any fix? Thanks so much! Love your work!

  59. Do I need to rename Gee’s battery.png files to match the default .png file names in order to display? Or can i leave them as is and just delete the original and copy his over?

  60. Just move the icons out of the last row and onto the next page using the nifty wiggle feature!

  61. I have a jailbreak 1.1.3 ipod and i was wondering how you got your ipod to show up on your mac ?? How do you get to /private/var i see the link and it shows you where to go but i cant get anything to show up on my mac other than itunes pops open when i plug in my ipod touch. I have downloaded the gee theme and wish to install it on my 1.1.3 is there programs that i have to have downloaded on my mac?

  62. @Alex

    That’s not a stupid question. 🙂

Over here we love to use AFPd (needs update for firmware 1.1.3).

Mount and use your iPod touch as a Thumb Drive!

  63. @Trevor

Thanks for the pointer. Yes, Apple changed our user name from “root” to “mobile” in the firmware 1.1.3 update.

That’s causing compatibility problem for many apps…. but that’s another story eh.

    Cheers.

  64. @DividedByZero

Yes, “skip last row” is omitted in the new Summerboard 3.1-1 not by oversight but an engineering issue. You see, we can re-arrange our wiggling icons now, a feat not possible prior to this update. To skip a row now requires major rewriting of Summerboard. So it’s taken off for now.

But not to worry, I’ve worked all day to come up with a new Gee Themew for 1.1.3! There’s no need to skip the last row in this updated version. I will release it the next day.

Gee Theme for iPod touch 1.1.3 – Sneak Preview

  65. @Trevor

    I don’t like you, Trevor!

Why didn’t you type in jumbo size font and in bright blinking red to catch my attention?!!!! I thought it’s not possibe to skip the last row (see my above reply) and spent the Sunday updating the Gee Theme!

    Stop laughing so hard!

    Sob.

  66. Sorry about that Rupert. I’ll have to work on my use of eye-catching fonts. All I could muster was an exclamation point. But I think, the more Gee Themes the better! Keep ’em coming. Thanks for everything on this fantastic blog!

  67. 🙂

  68. Could you pls make that new update of 3 wallpapers for summeboard on 1.1.1?? I have 3 list of appliacations but it shows me that three dot in “Jailbreak edition” so if you can, pls fix it 🙂
there is screen of my 1.1.1 😉

  69. @watterman

Thanks for the feedback and especially for attaching a pic which helps explain the problem.

Strangely I thought the position of the dots didn’t change, but then I didn’t actually checked them out. 😛

Studying your pic, I also found out even the docked icons are different — prior to 1.1.3, they have reflection!

I’ll have to downgrade to 1.1.1 first to fix the problems, and probably put up an updated zip for different firmwares.

    Thanks again!

  70. Please make a Desktop wallpaper in this same vain. It’s fantastic.

  71. I love your theme. I kinda like the original theme vs the update. I understand the need to move the frame down for those that are using the third row of icons, I’m just gonna move em about with the wobbly.

This is a how mine is looking with your theme:

If you could make the status bar lines a little wider for the non 24-hour clock users is would make that part perfect. I also use the icons from my Leopard theme and it looks amazing. I’d be happy to share em with ya.

  72. Waiting patiently for the FW1.1.1 version. Thanks!

  73. Since Customize 1.21 isn’t working on my iTouch 1.1.3-JB, any idea how to get the BatteryImages back again, without overwriting the default ones?

  74. @Puppster

Thanks for the feedback and the pic. Grin, I was told about the width of the Status Bar being too short for 12 hours time format, and made the changes but I totally forgot to update the zip! sigh.

    So here’s the widen version.

Please download it, and rename it “StatusBar.png” (it’s case sensitive) before uploading and overwriting the copy in your iPod touch.

I’ll include and make it the default soon.

  75. @BOK,

Just copy out the original files, all 17 of them and safe keep them, before overwriting them with Gee Theme’s images.

    Original Gee Theme

  76. Hey everybody,

I’ve added Update Pack for firmware 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 iPod touches and the new look is now available for all firmware versions!

    🙂

  77. @Dan DIemer

Hey… that’s an idea. I’ll fool around the idea when I’ve some free time.

    Thanks!

  78. “Direct” option for battery images doesn’t seem to be working 😦 Can’t download them cos of an error

  79. @Slashman X,

Oops. I’ve fixed the link. Please try again.

  80. what it VNsea???

  81. im trying to download the themes on to my ipod but i cant locate the fold that u r talking about can u tell me where i can locate it on my mac
    thanks

  82. Is it possible to jailbreak when I have a PC?

  83. @ndwboy95

    Here you go:

Run Windows XP in iPod touch

  84. @brian

The folder is in your iPod touch’s /System/Library/Core Services/Springboard.app/ folder, and its accessible via SSH. It’s not in your Mac at all.

  85. @Michael

Of course but I dont know how. Seek help over there: http://www.ipodtouchfans.com/forums/

  86. Hey Guys,

I was wondering how am I suppose to do this for windows.

I tried using using the ssh client to get into it, but it just doesn’t connect for some reason.

Is there anyway to get the theme on the iTouch with Windows XP?

    Thanks,
    Silent

  87. @Silent

Do you have OpenSSH installed in your iPod touch? You gotta try and make it possible to ssh into your iPod touch, not just for the theme but other purposes too, you know?

  88. or try plugin for total commander = t-pot

    😉

  89. Hey Rupert,

Yes, I do have it installed, and I’m looking at it right this moment and it’s in my installed apps under the “Installer”

    @Watterman
    I’ll try that…

    Thanks,
    Silent

  90. @watterman

This method worked perfectly! Thanks for the help guys. 🙂

    Sincerely,
    Silent

  91. hey man, I was wondering if you could a small modification to the theme that allows for 4 rows of springboard icons… I find that the tiny iPod Touch badge overlaps some of my icons, do you think you could do a wallpaper just like it but without the badge? thanks!

  92. He made it : Feb 5, 2008 Update: The Update Pack

  93. That’s what I was referring to. The update has a theme that allows 4 rows of springboard icons, but it adds an ipod touch badge to the dock, which overlaps my dock icons. I would like a version of the same wallpaper minus the little badge.

  94. Hi there, ive installed everything on my iPod Touch which I got for my birthday (09/02) and I jailbroke it in like an hour. I followed the method on your blog to a tee and I must admit it worked brilliantly but back onto topic here, I installed the Theme and the new Battery pictures but I realised that the Wallpaper wasn’t getting displayed.

    I’m on 1.1.3 Jailbroken.

If anyone could be of any assistance..
    <:)

  95. Thanks for the nice themes. They look great on my iPod Touch.

    *^^*

  96. @itoucher

    Three possibilities:

    1) You forgot to enable the “Theme Wallpaper” and “Wallpaper” options in SummberBoard’s settings.

    2) The Wallpaper file is not named correctly. It must be named “Wallpaper.png” (It’s cAsE senstive).

    3) The Wallpaper.png file itself is corrupted. Try installing the Panther theme that is already in Summberboard’s theme collection to see if its Wallpaper loads. If it does, re-upload Gee Theme’s Wallpaper.png.

  97. @Pablo

Hi! How’s your own theme coming along?

I don’t want to remove the small badge for the 4 rows version, as the badge is one thing that sets the Gee Theme apart from others. It’s cool. Maybe you want to remove all the docked icons? Your iPod touch would look even more unique.

  98. All right! At last, after some hassle , everything’s in order, Jailbroken and officially labeled that way with your magnificent wallpapers. Thanks for guiding us through all these steps to make an already great iPod even greater!

  99. Hi Rupert, thanks for the advice..

    It didn’t work 😦

Ive enabled Theme Wallpaper and Wallpaper and uploaded everything again.

Still no sign of the wallpaper.

    Thanks, Mr. iToucher

  100. @mr itoucher

Does the wallpaper of the “Panther” theme show up when you select to install the theme? If it doesn’t… something’s wrong with your Summberboard. If it does, please copy and overwrite Gee Theme’s Wallpaper.png with Panther’s Wallpaper.png. If Gee Theme’s Wallpaper now doesn’t show up when you use the Panther Theme, then the said Wallpaper.png is corrupted.

  101. Amazing theme Rupert…I happened on it today after I installed 1.1.3 and I’m shocked I didn’t find it sooner!

Is there any chance of you redoing the 8 wallpapers [with the silhouettes] badged for iPhone instead of iPod touch? Thanks!

  102. Forgot to mention that the new theme pack is great as well…any chance of iPhone badges for that? Thanks!

  103. Hopefully last thing I forgot this time Rupert…there are no icons for the iPod / Phone [since you’re using the iPod touch]. Would it be possible ot make those so the theme is more unified for iPhone users? Thanks!

  104. @Zach

Thanks for the kind words! I’ll do the iPhone version once I have some free time.

  105. Hi,

Do I have to have SSH to do that:

“Upload the entire “Gee (iPod touch)” folder to your iPod touch’s either one of the following folder depending on your firmware version”?

Because, I can’t get out to see these folders with my ipod…

  106. hey, i was wondering if anyone knew what is wrong with the new version of summerboard for version 1.1.3 jailbreak? I’ve got the theme on my ipod and it shows up in the list on summerboard but does not show up on the actual screen where it really matters. Any ideas?

  107. Can I use this theme without SummerBoard? I cant find pngs for wallpaper(springboard) and docks 😦 I can change icons of applications, but i dont know how to change wallpaper and dock…

  108. Love the theme! Any plans to make battery images with iPhone on them?

  109. Hi Rupert. First, I love the theme. However, when I ssh it to my
    /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/
folder it appears in Cyberduck but I don’t see it on my ipod. As in, when I go into Themes for Summerboard it’s not there… Am I doing something stupid here?

  110. @Sean

My guess is you have firmware 1.1.3? Cool! For 1.1.3, you’ll upload into the following folder instead:

    /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/

I’ve updated the main post to make it more obvious.

  111. so is there no possible way to do the gee theme on a pc?

  112. How do i jailbreak the version 1.1.3 ?
    it’s very difficult

  113. @Galvanize

I’m using version 3.1-1 as installed by the Installer. It works in 1.1.3 right out of the box.

  114. I kind of need some help because i followed the instructions and used cute ftp to put it into my summerboard theme folder and when i opened the gee theme for my ipod nothing happen the only change is the wallpaper turns into the globe thing. I have jailbroken 1.1.1 help me!

  115. @phil fan

You need to either reboot your iPod touch, or tap on the “Restart Springboard” button for all the changes to take effect.

  116. Ok man so I downloaded it and uploaded it to my ipod through cuteFTP pro and did everything right… I think. I see it in summerboard but when I use it and restart spring board no custom icons or wallpaper. All that changes is the backround is one you can set through settings -> general -> wallpaper. I would love to have this theme as it is AWESOME but I can’t figure this out. Can you reply as quickly as possible plz!

  117. @momott

What version is your firmware and your Summerboard. Also, did you perform Step 4?

  118. Great, thanks Rupert. It was in that directory. Keep up the good work.

  119. OK here is my situation:
8gb ipod touch 1.1.3 jailbroken (ziphone), summerboard 3.1-1 or really the latest version if that is wrong.
I retraced my steps and the same thing happened. Re-downloaded and all. I also made sure that all options in step 4 are on. Still nothing. Any suggestions? I would completely love this theme!

  120. @momott

There are a few default Themes that are included when you install Summerboard, such as “Louie Mantia” and “Panther”. Do they work on your iPod touch? If they don’t up either, then perhaps you want to reinstall Summerboard (3.1-1 being the current version I see in my Installer.)

  121. I also have issues…I don’t have the wallpaper both in the springboard and when the Ipod is locked…Sometimes I only have it when it’s locked, sometimes only in springboard…it’s making me crazy…

  122. ok….got it…now it works…I made a mistake with the path…sorry for that.

One question: is it possible to have different wallpapers for unlock screen and springboard?

  123. @X-oR. Yes, definitely is. To change the unlock screen, just go t Settings > General > Wallpaper.

  124. thank you 😉

  125. Aha! I got it working. It was my fault though because I have winrar and it appeared as a rar file. When I clicked extract here it just gave me 2 folders, a one that sounded like your theme and a mac one. I uploaded the one into my iPod that looked like your theme. I just needed to go one folder smaller. Great theme though!

  126. Now that I have the battery images and also the full wallpaper pack (it looks marvelous) I think you should make a new theme. What about one about underwater or something, its lame I know… oh well you could think of something better I’m sure.

  127. His theme looks even better if u use his background and everything else but with the icons from the ‘Black Vista’ theme that u can download thru installer.

  128. @dharding

What’s the source for Black Vista? Would it keep nagging us “Are You Sure”? 🙂

  129. Rupert, this is an awesome theme! Definitely the best one I’ve seen. Do you know if/when we’ll be able to install it through Installer? I can’t get the SFTP to work but I would love to have this theme.

    Great work Rupert!

    Thanks.

  130. @Newtojailbreak

I still haven’t figured out how to have it on the Installer… and frankly not very motivated to.

You should find out how to SSH. You’ll need it for many other things beside installing themes. If you’re on a Mac, here’s a tutorial.

How to SSH into your iPod touch on a Mac

  131. Having some troubles with the Battery images… Seems 1.1.3 has eliminated the “System/Library/CoreServices” folder. That, or I just can’t find it. Any idea where to put them, or what’s wrong?

  132. Is the mediafire link for the original zip file down? It won’t let me download the file.

  133. What is the program u use to access the ipod touches local files. For example, when it tells u to go to /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/to install gee theme, how do u access that folder? please help ASAP!!!

  134. @David

If you’re a Mac user, the easiest way to manipulate the iPod touch’s files is via AFP. You can find out more about it at the following post:

Mount and use your iPod touch as a Thumb Drive!

Alternatively you can SSH into your iPod touch too. Mac’s inastructions is below:

How to SSH into your iPod touch on a Mac

If you’re on Windows, please look up how to SSH as I’m not fluent with PC.

  135. …So nothing on the missing CoreServices folder then?

  136. Hey Rupert:

What are the benefits of going from a jailbroken 1.1.2 to 1.1.3?
    Is it worth the effort?

    Peter

  137. @roksob

Hmm… good question. Superficially it’s always nice to have the “latest”. 😛 Wiggling icons and the new apps are cool too. Best of all, many audiophiles claims 1.1.3 sounds better.

  138. @DividedByZero

sorry I missed your comment earlier.

/System/Library/CoreServices is definitely still there. It’s a very important folder that exists onevery Mac OS X system.

  139. @PodToucher

It’s working fine on my side; try again.

  140. @RupertGee: re:@DividedByZero

Um… Well, if the CoreServices folder is still there, I don’t see it. Could you maybe post the path to it on the iPod? Please also, if you could, post which drive it is in (as whenever I AFP my iPod, I have 3 drives to choose from).

  141. hi,

Thanks for such a wonderful theme. I must say this is the best theme around.

However, i am unable to change the wallpaper after the the Summerboard install and your theme installed.. I want to add your wallpaper as well..

Can you tell me how can i get that done ?

  142. @GTerminal

Hey, you have to buy a Mac first before I know how to do it. 😛

Seriously, I have no idea how to import the Wallpapers into iTunes on a PC. Could you look up the Help in iTunes?

  143. When i download this ‘Zip’ file i unzip it and put the whole folder to that directory, but then when i choose that theme via ipod touch it only uses the same background that i am using for the Main Desktop thing and then nothing else changes.
I am downloading the right one for 1.1.2 and am running vista ultimate.
    Please help asap!!

  144. Is there anyway that this can be downloaded onto a Window?
Will there ever be a way?

  145. So I finally figured out where the CoreServices folder was! Yay! However, when I tried replacing the files (using AFP and 1.1.3, if that means anything), I tested them out by plugging it into a charger- and the screen is black, with no pictures showing up! And I can’t even replace the original files because I lost them. Help?

  146. wow.. cheers my 1.1 was jailbroken for ages and last night it stopped working i paniked and updated to 1.4 lost everything .found your site and wow i down graded to 1.1 then upgraded to 1.2 the used the installer app to upgrade to 1.3 changed teh battery as shown its amazing i love it the only thing i cant get to work is the background wallpaper but thats not loss my installer and apps are back so a big ill keep my 20 pound to apple and a massive thankyou to you for this very detailed and easy to do instalation i cant thankyou enough cheer 🙂

  147. Problems with the battery.
I cant get it in! cant find the customize file nor does springboard accept it. My springboard is an unopenable app. is it diff for tiger?

PS. Your Gee Theme rocks 😀

  148. Awesome theme. But there’s two things I think should be edited.
Both are when in the music player and tilting the ipod so you get into cover flow. The little box around the clock is a little to the left of the clock – it’s not surrounding it in the center of the screen.

The second thing is almost the same. It’s just another box – the one surrounding the battery icon when in cover flow. The thing is I have mobilescrobbler on, so I have two icons in stead of one up there, so the line of the box you made cuts right through the mobilescrobbler icon.

Anyway I or you could fix this?

really awesome theme though, definitely my favorite ipod touch theme!

  149. Hi !!
Only one Thing! Thank you !!

  150. @Lewis

There are a few themes that came with Summerboard, such as one named “Panther”. Could you install Panther and see if its Wallpaper changed? If not, there’s something wrong with your Summerboard. <ake sure it’s the latest version (currently 3.1-1.) If Panther installs fine, then it’s probably a file permission issue. The easiest solution is to make sure the “Gee (iPod touch)” folder and contents are 777.

  151. @Julie-Anna

Hang on there; in a day or two Gee Theme will be in the Installer. 🙂

  152. @thegpc

[Insert big and silly grin here]

I’m so sorry. I didn’t give you the correct path to navigate to. Using AFPd, you should navigate to:

    Root File System/System/Library/CoreServices/

You will find the “Springboard” app in there. Use your mouse to select it, and then right-click for “Show Package Contents”. A new window will pop-up. You should see a whole bunch of .png files in it. Then just drag & drop the Gee Battery images into it, overwriting all the originals.

  153. Thanks Rupert. Finally found it. ^_^

Now I have a bigger problem. I drag and drop to replace… But the battery charge screen (where the pics are supposed to show up) is just black now! Did I do something wrong?

  154. @thegpc

Maybe you mistaken where it is.

You know the Unlock Screen? The battery charge screen is the same screen except it only shows up when you are charging the iPod.

So… put your iPod to sleep (press power button once), and wake it up (press power again.)

    Maybe try rebooting first.

  155. No no, I did that. But somehow, the file type on the PNGs was different. I don’t know.

When I tried to open the defaults in Preview, they show up as a question mark, and the size is “0x0”. And when I replaced them, nothing showed up, it was just black, as if there was no file for the unlock screen to recognize.

Any thoughts? I know, it’s weird.

  156. @Jay

Yes, Springboard is unopenable in Finder, and has an icon of a white circle with a bar across it right? That simply means you can’t run it in your Mac OS X.

What you need to do is right-click on the Springboard app and choose “Show Package Content”. Then simply drag & drop the Gee Battery Images files into the pop-up window, overwriting the original files.

  157. @thegpc

Yah, those .png made by Apple for use in the iPod touch are all not viewable outside the iPod touch. You can say they are not real .png files. 🙂 There’s a command-line utility to convert them.

Maybe you can re-download the zip? http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?0q2uci4tuyn

These are standard compliant png files you can view anywhere.

  158. @Otown

Thanks so much for the feedback. I’ve been thinking about how to resolve the issue but it’s close to impossible due to how the landscape mode works.

I have submitted a new version of Gee Theme to iSpazio and it should be available in the Installer soon. The new version… does not have the Status Bar. I’m so clever. Hahaha.

  159. Hmm… Does that mean some sort of converting utility is needed to make them compatible for the iPod?

PS, if I sent my theme (http://lady-tima.deviantart.com/art/Amora-v1-2-1-75615355) to iSpazio or to you, would one of you sponsor it? Is it that simple?

  160. @thegpc

Wow your theme is nice. It’s status bar looks familiar. haha.

No coversion is necessary. The iPod touch reads the standard .png files plus its own strange .png format. We only convert them to read in our Mac.

    I use this one: http://www.newsfirex.com/blog/?p=176

There’s no need to send your theme to me. Just submit it to:

    http://themes.ispazio.net/

I’m not entirely sure if it gets into the Installer automatically after that… but that’s the impression Fabiano gave me. 🙂

  161. Rupert-

I uploaded it to the site and checked Installer: it doesn’t do it automatically. Maybe only if they like it a WHOLE lot.

I’m flattered you like it though.

Also, I’ll try the Battery images thing later. Gotta rest up for SATs (basically, college entrance exams) tomorrow!

Thanks as always for the best iPod help on the Net.

  162. So are you going to release a new version that has a fix for the box that should be surrounding the clock while in cover flow?

  163. will the application summerboard be available for non-jailbreakers when SDK is released? the theme looks awesome, but I just got the 1.1.4 firmware, so I can’t downgrade to jailbreak. please email me at rdsxrule117@aim.com with the answer. thanks

  164. yo Rupert, do you think you are going to fix the glitch I’m talking about when in cover flow? It’s an extremely cool theme (I use the one that’s aluminium all over), but it’s just such a shame that it looks like that in the cover flow. Also, how did you get the reflection on the dock icons?

  165. @Otown:

The reflection was included in the docks of iPod Touches up until 1.1.3, when it was taken out. Since Summerboard no longer works with 1.1.1 or 1.1.2, the reflected Dock is now obsolete. Sorry.

  166. @Otown

I can’t fix it. You see, for the Status Bar to work in Coverflow mode, it can only be a color bar (not a pattern) so that the iPod touch can stretch it across the screen. Stretching the GeeTheme status bar distorts it.

So I decided to totally omit it. For now, you can go to Summerboard’s settings and turn off the Status Bar.

  167. Hey

Can you please post all the GeeThemes on installer?

    Thanks!

  168. Joshua add this repo to the installer: http://repo.ispazio.net/
and you will find both geetheme in iSpazio themes category. thanks rupert

  169. No, thank you Fabiano for making so many users happy!

  170. hey great theme. i cant decide between the first one and another. i was looking at the pics and was just wondering what VNsea is. it looks like remote desktop, but i just want to make sure.

  171. @Cory

It’s kinda like Remote Desktop. More specifically, it’s the “Screen Sharing” part of Remote Desktop.

It’s really cool. You gotta install it, k?

Run Windows XP in iPod touch

  172. Hi the mediafire links are getting redirected to the homepage of mediafire (www.mediafire.com) almost instantly after displaying the message…scanning for virus…

Any mirrors for the files or is there any specific method to get files of mediafire.

  173. Hey Rupert

Thanks for the Gee theme!!! It is so annoying not being able to skip the last row on summerboard ( versions 1.1.3 and 4)
Im having problems with customize though. I have placed the gee theme battery in the battery folder on customize and it recognizes it but when I change to it nothing happens? Can you help?

  174. You can just drag the icons on the “last row” away to the next page.

  175. @Qwestpod

Mediafire working fine. Try another browser?

  176. @jamo
I don’t use Customize no more. It seems crazy to install an app to do just one thing… and Customize hasn’t been performing well since 1.1.3.

Since you know how to upload to customize’s folder, why not do the direct replacement method? It’s fool proof.

  177. Heya.
    I have a problem…..
I am running Vista Ultimate and download it and follow all instructions.
I use winVNC to ssh into my ipod and when i put it where it should be and then restart springboard, when i go into summberboard and change theme to the GEE THEME it then restarts springboard and when i go into my menu… home screen thingy. it is back to the original 1.1.3 dock and the wallpaper is what i use as the main wallpaper…. ive followed intructions step by step about 5 times and still never works… I am using 1.1.3..
Please help and tell me what im doing wrong and how i can sort it
    Thanks
    LEWIS 🙂

  178. Hey there again. Got a new theme- “Stele”- that I was thinking maybe you’d critique for me? Just to work out some style issues.

    http://lady-tima.deviantart.com/art/Stele-v1-0-80295202

  179. I’m having problems with the battery icon. My battery folder is called HeaderBatteryImage, and in there there’s another folder called “Backup”. I don’t see the regular battery folder in there..?

  180. @Otown:

Are you using Customize? It’s odd to navigate that. Try using the Direct Replacement method.

  181. I’m using customize yeah. It’s weird I don’t have the BatteryImages folder. I had it on my old ipod touch, which was also 1.1.3

If I use the direct replacement method, how will I be able to get the standard back if I ever wish to do so?

  182. @Otown:

Customize behaves weirdly on 1.1.3, and even worse on 1.1.4.

Um, the Direct Replacement method is simple to undo. Just save the original files from the iPod before overwriting them.

  183. Aight, I’ll give it a try then.. They should make a new version of customize though.. Thanks for your answers 🙂 Still use this theme, and I still like it a lot

  184. How do you downgrade from 1.1.4 to 1.1.1??

  185. @Otown
HeaderBatteryImage is the battery image in the top right corner, not the charging battery. I believe that one is called Battery Images

  186. uhh.
i found the Gee Theme on installer and used it via smbprefs.
did you find out how to post it up?
it doesn’t have the battery image or the wallpapers, but it has the similar summerboard theme, like the iron mesh in the dock.

  187. Hi rupert, first of all compliments for your great job, just a question: which components to create something like your iphone-ipod theme? I’m playing with Photoshop creating icons and wallpapers, but this kind of mask on it is fantastic. Can you suggest me how to create it? thanks and great job. Paolo

  188. Hey Rupert,

Does the battery image work with Customize 2.0??

  189. Hey, under your Gee Theme battery image (which is totally awesome by the way) you should change the directory to install it directly into customize. The correct file directory is private/var/root/Library/Customize/BatteryImages

Just saying. I had to figure that out 😀

  190. For the update pack, do you need 1.1.1 1.1.2 or 1.1.2? I have 1.1.4. Also, do you need a mac? I got a windows vista (it’s sooo slow!!!)

  191. @Max
Scroll back up, and then download the one for 1.1.3. There’s practically no difference between 1.1.3 and 1.1.4

  192. hi i love this theme, however it is possible to get the theme onto your ipod using total commander 7 if you are using a pc

  193. Yeash!! I think every body can find Discount iPod Touch&Discount iPod Touch Accessories from this link
    Please Visit
    http://astore.amazon.com/ipod-touch.apple-20

  194. my question is not related to ipod touch but i couldnt find the answer i was looking for anywhere, if i use an unlocked iphone for T-mobile, will safari work, and will i be charged for the internet service?

  195. @Eben
I myself don’t have an iphone, but from what ive learned, safari will work for free with wifi. but with edge, i dont know if it would cost. sorry

  196. what is edge??

  197. edge is internet, but provided for by the service provider for a charge, though i’ve heard that only att’s edge works on iphones. don’t quote me on that though

  198. do i have to jailbreak the ipod to change the theme?

  199. Yes Drake, you do.

  200. do you guys think Apple will be releasing a new ipod touch later this year since the ipod touch was released a few months right after the iphone was came on the market. And the new 3G iphone will be released something in June or July.

  201. I don’t think they’ll be releasing a new iPod touch, but definitely new firmware next month

  202. Why arent my themes showing up when I click themes?

  203. @Andrew:

You have to restart your iPhone/iPod to activate Summerboard. Meaning, hold down the power button, slide the red slide rto turn it off, then turn it back on.

  204. i was wondering if any of you guys know of any website that sells the 8gb ipod touch for the cheapest price, am trying to price match it so that i can buy it from walmart

  205. Ebay?

  206. i thought ebay was not allowed?

  207. Why wouldn’t they be allowed? The iPod touch is nothing illegal.

  208. @V-

He means you’re not allowed to use eBay prices to compare at Wal-Mart.

  209. Can I port the battery to customize 2.0?

  210. u guys just one word to describ
    COOL!!!!!

i wish someone can help me to do it. i have no idea with itouch. i have a itouch, and i jailbreak it, causing many kinds of troubles and i just restore it. DOn’t care. I really wish someone can help me!~~~~ LAZiness

  211. when do u guys think apple will be coming out with a new ipod touch

  212. can oyu get this to work on your itouch if you have a windows computer??

  213. I don’t think it will work on a Mac for the iTouch either.

    This is an iTouch: http://en.pasen.it/product_detail.php?id=23

  214. Very funny HWZner.

So that’s the infamous iTouch eh? I’ve been wondering about it. 🙂

  215. >Kateeeeeyyyy

If you’re using firmware 1.x, you can install the Gee Theme directly via your “iTouch”; it’s in the Installer.

If you’re using firmware 2.x, the theme will be in Cydia once I’m done updating it.

  216. where do you find your IPod folders on osx to put the theme in them

  217. >ao

You don’t put the theme in your OS X. The files go into your iPod only.

You might find it easier to install the theme directly via Cydia (iPhone OS 2) or Installer (iPhone OS 1).

  218. Hi…I am a 13 year old kid who has no idea how to jailbreak my ipod touch. i really want to get sprngboard and summerboard on my ipod so that i can get your gee theme. it looks really really cool. would you please be able to help me/give me some instructions on how to get springboard, summerboard, and then finally Gee Theme? Thnx.
P.S. would you be able to email your response as i probably won’t be able to find my way back to your forum tomorrow!

  219. Oh Yeah… I forgot 2 mention it. I only have a PC. Is That Kool?

  220. >Harry

You don’t want SummerBoard anymore. It’s for the old iPhone firmware 1.x. You’ll jailbreak all the way to the latest and coolest firmware version 2.1. With firmware 2.1, you’ll use the WinterBoard instead of SummerBoard.

Gee Theme 2 version 2.1 for WinterBoard is Now Available

  221. kool. thanks. hay.. i did find mi way bak to ur forum! 🙂 again..how do i get winterboard? do i go through the link on your other comment or is that for the old iphone software? Thanks

  222. oh yah. and is it 100% safe? mi parents would go apeshit if they found out id bricked my itouch?

  223. i used the jailbreak that u reccomended. and i got up to the end of step two and iTunes said that there was an unknown error in the restore. it then put itouch in recovery mode and i had to fully restore it. what do you reccomend i do?

  224. >Harry

The guide is for iPhone *only*. You have an iPod touch?! You followed the wrong guide then. :O

But dun worry, just use iTunes to restore your iPod touch to factory fresh condition, and start over with the right guide for iPod touch.

And oh, this is an iTouch: http://en.pasen.it/product_detail.php?id=23

So… unless you really have an iTouch, say iPod touch.

    😉

  225. poops sorry man. I’m live ion new Zealand and have herd the term itouch b4 and assumed that it was just a shortened version:(.so anyway is the guide for the iPod touch on that same website?
