The Gee theme for Summerboard is designed with one aim in mind; to show off the iPod touch in a manly way using dark metallic material as if it’s built for tough handling. Your iPod touch no longer looks out of place in your jeans or tuxedo.

SummerBoard, an excellent Theme app, is required. You can install it via the Installer. After installation, you’ll find the “SMBPrefs” app in your Springboard to set your preferences, and choose your Theme.

The Gee Theme is not yet available at any repository, so you’ll have to download and install it manually. Here’s how:

  1. Download this zip file (508.6 KB) to your Mac.
  2. Unzip the archive.
  3. Upload the entire “Gee (iPod touch)” folder to your iPod touch’s either one of the following folder depending on your firmware version:
    • Firmware Ver 1.1.1 & 1.1.2
      /private/var/root/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/  camera.gif
    • Firmware 1.1.3
      /private/var/mobile/Library/SummerBoard/Themes/
  4. Launch “SMBpref” and turn ON camera.gif the following options:
    • Theme Wallpaper - ON
    • Theme Status Bar - ON
    • Theme Icons - ON
    • Theme Dock - ON
    • Wallpaper - ON
    • Skip Last Row - ON (for firmware 1.1.1 & 1.1.2 only)
  5. Look for the Gee Theme under “Themes”, and select it.
  6. Tap “Restart Springboard”.
  7. 6965854.jpg

  8. Included in the zip are 8 Wallpapers. They are for the Unlock Screen.
    • Mac Users: Import them to your Mac’s iPhoto.app, and launch iSync iTunes to sync them to your iPod touch. After that, tap on Settings -> General -> Wallpaper -> Select your choice -> Tap “Set Wallpaper”, and you’re done.
    • Windows Users: Buy a Mac.

FAQs:

  • Will it work on an iPhone? I seriously don’t know as Apple isn’t selling the Jesus phone in Singapore. However, I suspect it should, except it’ll confuse your friend into taking it’s an iPod touch. Maybe I’ll make one for iPhone. Maybe.
  • How to make a baby? Illustrated answer.
  • Can I make you a cash donation for your effort? I find it hard to believe that’s a FAQ! Thanks for the thought though.

Jan 9 Update: Wallpaper for iPhone

iphone-badge.png
By request I’m making available a special iPhone badged Wallpaper for use with the mothership. Unfortunately I don’t have the Jesus Phone. I’m sure it’s a great phone but I need a mobile phone with a very good camera; at the very least it gotta know how to auto-focus. What that means is I can’t test the Theme on it. Feel free to let me know if the Wallpaper fits, and I certainly welcome suggestions on how to improve it.

To use the Theme on an iPhone, download this special Wallpaper.png and replace it with the one in the zip file.

Jan 22 Update: Battery Images

A matching Battery Image for the Unlock Screen is now available. It is an optional install; you do not need it for the Gee Theme to work but it’ll be nicer. On the other hand, you can install it for use with the default iPod touch or other themes as well.

There are two ways to install it.

Install directly into Springboard:

  • Download this zip, and copy (and overwrite) all 17 .png files into /System/Library/Core Services/Springboard.app
  • It’s not a bad idea to backup the original files first.

Install via Customize:

  • Download this zip, and copy the whole “Gee Theme” folder into /Library/Customize/BatteryImages
  • Launch Customize, tap on “Battery Image”, select the Gee Battery, and exit Customize.

To see the screen, your iPod touch must be charging via the USB Cable.

Feb 5, 2008 Update: The Update Pack

When Apple released the version 1.1.3 firmware update, everyone is very impressed by the new-look Dock which spots a perforated metal mesh background. It reminds me of the ultimate Mac money can buy — the Mac Pro.

So I updated the Gee Theme with a perforated polished stainless-steel mesh in order to show off the iPod touch runs on the latest firmware. Yes, that’s right; polished aluminium! I gotta one-up Apple on the cool factor. When you tilt and swivel your iPod touch back and fore, the perforated Dock seemingly catches rainbow rays of lights that shimmer - a distinctive characteristic of polished brushed aluminium. :)

Three designs are available and included in the Update Pack. There’s one with a fully perforated background, while the other two have a perforated Dock. A departure from the usual Gee Theme, there’s one design for those of you who might not want to “skip the last row.” The famous iPod touch badge is thus smaller in size to accomodate a full house of icons on the Springboard. For the two “skip last row” designs, I’ve added a small badge to show off I’m proud that our iPod touch are Jailbroken!

To install the Update Pack:

  • You must already installed the original Gee Theme.
  • Download and unzip the correct zip file depending on your firmware version:
    • For firmware version 1.1.3 - Download
    • For firmware versions 1.1.1 and 1.1.2 - Download
  • Select the design you like best, and rename it to “Wallpaper.png”. The filename is cAsE sensitive.
  • Upload and replace it with the copy in the “Gee Theme (iPod touch)” folder.
  • Launch SummerBoard’s SMBPrefs, scroll-down and tap on the “Restart Springboard” button. The new background will appear shortly after.

Feb 9, 2008 Update: No Docked Icons

Hey it looks pretty cool without any docked icons. Just wiggle away (firmware 1.1.3 only) the docked icons.

Feel free to leave your comments.

Revisions:

  • Jan 2, 2008 Version 1.1 - Added 4 new Wallpapers and more custom icons. Revised some icons for placement in the Dock to give the iPod touch a more Mac OS X look and feel.
  • Feb 6, 2008 Version 1.2 - Widen the Status Bar to support 12-hour Time format.

Am I missing something here… I tried using iSync to load the wallpaper’s but the iPod Touch isn’t recognized as it’s looking for a bluetooth connection.
Can you elaborate on this for me Rupert?
    Thanks.

    Hi Scotty!

iSync? iSync has absolutely nothing to do with our iPod touch. All syncing are done in iTunes only.

Fire up your iTunes with your iPod connected. Look closely and you’ll see a “Photos” tab. That’s where you tell iTunes which photo albums from your iPhoto Library it should sync to your iPod touch. That means to say you must first import the 8 wallpapers into your iPhoto Library. After that you can select them in iTunes to sync over to your iPod touch.

By the way, you can also sync your Address Book and iCal entries via the last tab, “Info“.

… and we thought iTunes’ only good for music and videos. :)

Hi Pablo, thanks for pointing out the clock being small. I overlooked international clock setting. Myself I use the 24 hours clock, and that does not show am/pm.

The other problem with the clock while in video mode. It’s an oddity I haven’t found a solution yet. In the mean time, if you’re bothered by it, what you can do is delete “StatusBar.png” from the theme’s folder. I hope to find a way around this soon.

Mike, what you need now is a sFTP client to connect from your PC to your iPod touch.

Regrefully I don’t know which sFTP client is good for Windows, but here’s a page that tells you more about sFTP and suitable clients. I googled and here’s one of the many free graphical sFTP client for Windows that should work. Try it. sFTP/SSH is an important way to install 3rd party apps for the iPod touch.

Your wonderful theme has been serving me well for about a month now. However, last night I installed 1.1.3 and jailbroke it. Now, I don’t know if this is a badness in 1.1.3 or the new Summerboard, but the “Skip Last Row” option seems to be noticeably missing, making the applicability of the Gee Theme a bit lessened. Yes, “skip last row” is omitted in the new Summerboard 3.1-1 not by oversight but an engineering issue. You see, we can re-arrange our wiggling icons now, a feat not possible prior to this update. To skip a row now requires major rewriting of Summerboard. So it’s taken off for now.

But not to worry, I’ve worked all day to come up with a new Gee Themew for 1.1.3! There’s no need to skip the last row in this updated version. I will release it the next day.

Thanks for the feedback and the pic. Grin, I was told about the width of the Status Bar being too short for 12 hours time format, and made the changes but I totally forgot to update the zip! sigh.

    So here’s the widen version.

    http://rupertgee.wordpress.com/files/2008/02/statusbar.png

Please download it, and rename it “StatusBar.png” (it’s case sensitive) before uploading and overwriting the copy in your iPod touch.

I’ll include and make it the default soon.

Hi there, ive installed everything on my iPod Touch which I got for my birthday (09/02) and I jailbroke it in like an hour. I followed the method on your blog to a tee and I must admit it worked brilliantly but back onto topic here, I installed the Theme and the new Battery pictures but I realised that the Wallpaper wasn’t getting displayed.

    I’m on 1.1.3 Jailbroken.

    Three possibilities:

    1) You forgot to enable the “Theme Wallpaper” and “Wallpaper” options in SummberBoard’s settings.

    2) The Wallpaper file is not named correctly. It must be named “Wallpaper.png” (It’s cAsE senstive).

    3) The Wallpaper.png file itself is corrupted. Try installing the Panther theme that is already in Summberboard’s theme collection to see if its Wallpaper loads. If it does, re-upload Gee Theme’s Wallpaper.png.

Hi! How’s your own theme coming along?

I don’t want to remove the small badge for the 4 rows version, as the badge is one thing that sets the Gee Theme apart from others. It’s cool. Maybe you want to remove all the docked icons? Your iPod touch would look even more unique.

  6. All right! At last, after some hassle , everything’s in order, Jailbroken and officially labeled that way with your magnificent wallpapers. Thanks for guiding us through all these steps to make an already great iPod even greater!

Does the wallpaper of the “Panther” theme show up when you select to install the theme? If it doesn’t… something’s wrong with your Summberboard. If it does, please copy and overwrite Gee Theme’s Wallpaper.png with Panther’s Wallpaper.png. If Gee Theme’s Wallpaper now doesn’t show up when you use the Panther Theme, then the said Wallpaper.png is corrupted.

There are a few default Themes that are included when you install Summerboard, such as “Louie Mantia” and “Panther”. Do they work on your iPod touch? If they don’t up either, then perhaps you want to reinstall Summerboard (3.1-1 being the current version I see in my Installer.)

If you’re a Mac user, the easiest way to manipulate the iPod touch’s files is via AFP. You can find out more about it at the following post:

    http://rupertgee.wordpress.com/2007/12/29/mount-ipod-thumb/

Alternatively you can SSH into your iPod touch too. Mac’s inastructions is below:

If you’re on Windows, please look up how to SSH as I’m not fluent with PC.
