Feb 8, 2008 Update: This method is obsolete. Please use a new and the best method in this post instead. Thank you.

As of today (Dec 2, 2007), we need to jailbreak in firmware 1.1.1. There’s no known method to jailbreak directly in firmware version 1.1.2. If your iPod touch has firmware version 1.1.2, you’ll have to downgrade it first. After jailbreaking in version 1.1.1, we can upgrade our iPod touch to the latest version 1.1.2 firmware (to enjoy all its new features and functionalities) while keeping it “Jailbroken.” Therefore, unless your iPod touch is already at version 1.1.1 (not 1.1.0 or less), you’ll need to downgrade first.

Before we start Jailbreaking, you must make sure your iPod touch Wi-Fi is working. You must be able to surf the net using the iPod touch’s Safari. Otherwise Jailbreaking makes little sense as you’ll need the net to install apps and otherwise customise your iPod touch.

Okay, let’s Jailbreak it.

STEP 1: INSTALLING APPSNAPP

Using your iPod touch’s Safari, surf to http://jailbreakme.com. Scroll to the bottom of the page, and you’ll tap on the “Install AppSnapp” link. Your Safari will load the link, and suddenly freak out and your iPod touch returns to the Springboard (that’s the “Home” screen.) Done right, you will see a spinning wheel download progress indicator (it looks like this) while your iPod touch downloads AppSnapp in the background. If you don’t see the indicator (within no more than 2 seconds after tapping the said link), re-apply this step until you do! Yes, keep on trying…, and trying…, and trying…. Depending on connection quality, it took me well over 4 tries before the indicator appeared! Some users report trying over days. That’s right, days! My best advise is to have a good internet connection, and perhaps try again at odd hours. (edit: I’ve since jailbroken a few iPod touch and this method always works.)

Properly done, you’ll see in your Springboard a new icon named “Installer”. Your iPod touch has been jailbroken! Wheeeee…. You can go to the next step to upgrade your iPod touch to v1.1.2 after that.

Checklist:

  • You can only see the “Install AppSnapp” link via iPod touch’s Safari. Don’t bother trying with your OS X’s Firefox, Safari or whatever browser.
  • Furthermore, the “Install AppSnapp” link will only show up provided you are not connected to the net via a proxy. For Singnet users, just go to iPod touch’s Wi-Fi setting and check that the Proxy setting is set to “None”. You can revert the change after Jailbreaking.

STEP 2: PREPARING FOR V1.1.2 UPGRADE

Jan 22 Update: Attention iTunes 7.6 users — Stop here. You cannot upgrade your iPod touch to version 1.1.2. As far as jailbreaking is concerned, your iPod touch is already jailbroken. Go install new apps (refer to Step 9 below) and start enjoying your Pod touch. If you insist on further upgrading to 1.1.2 and stay jailbroken, you must downgrade your iTunes to 7.5. Unfortunately as of now there’s no easy way to do that on your own Mac, but you can always go find a friend who is still using iTunes 7.5 to perform this step. .

Launch the “Installer” app just mentioned with your iPod touch connected to the net. After it has refreshed resources, tap on the “Install” option at the bottom of the screen, and then scroll down to “Tweaks (1.1.1)”. Select “OktoPrep” and tab the “Install” button on the top-right hand corner of the screen. You may return to the Springboard (by pressing the Home button) after that (your iPod will reset itself; nothing to worry about.)

STEP 3: PERFORMING THE V1.1.2 UPGRADE

Launch iTunes.app with your iPod connected. Select your iPod touch and click the Update button to tell iTunes to update your iPod touch to version 1.1.2. Then just wait for it to do its stuff before you proceed to the final step.

(Jan 15, 2008 Updates) Apple has made available firmware version 1.1.3. Version 1.1.3 now shows up in your iTunes after Step 2 instead of the expected version 1.1.2. DO NOT UPGRADE TO VERSION 1.1.3. Instead upgrade to version 1.1.2. Here’s how to do it:

  1. Download the 1.1.2 firmware package file to your Desktop. It’s a massive 158MB in filesize! Please use Firefox to download the firmware. It is widely reported Safari download will result in numerous problems.
  2. In iTunes.app, you should see a screen with an “Update” button and a “Restore” button. Press and hold-down the Option key and click on the Update button. A file browser will pop up for you to browse and select the Firmware file you downloaded above.
  3. It takes a while for iTunes to update the firmware. When it’s done … it’s done. You can check in iTunes or your iPod touch the firmware version. Try to keep your OS X free of other processes (like Skpying, rendering video etc) that could interrupt the delicate firmware update process, k!?
  4. After your iPod reboots, and connects itself to your iTunes.app, be sure to choose to setup your iPod as a new iPod. The other option to Restore from a backup will not work.

Checklist:

  • Don’t you yayapapaya click the “Restore” button, ok?! Click the “UPDATE” button, or you’ll have to re-start from Step 1.
  • If you’re observant, you will notice the Installer has disappeared. Don’t panic, it’ll re-appear again after the next step.

STEP 4: PERFORMING THE V1.1.2 JAILBREAK
jailbreak112.png
First, quit your iTunes. Yah, quit the buggar. I forgot and messed things up. (if you mess up as well, just run through this How-Tos from scratch again.)

Next, use your Mac OS X’s Firefox (or whatever) browser to surf to here and download the Jailbreak 1.1.2 App to your OS X’s Desktop. Unzip the just downloaded 1.1.2-jailbreak.zip by double-clicking it. After that you’ll see a new folder containing, among other files, a Java app named “jailbreak.jar”. Double-click on it to run the app, then follow its instructions. You’ll have the option to install “SSH”. Tick that option and install it. You’ll want to change the default password from alpine to something unique. Click the “Jailbreak!” button to start the process.
jailbrake-done-th.png
Your iPod touch will reboot itself a few times (exactly how many I lost count but it’s about 3 or 4 times at least) after Jailbreaking is done. During this period, your iTunes.app might launch, and scream about getting some errors. Dismiss the report, and just quit your iTunes.app. The Jailbreaking hasn’t done rebooting and your iTunes hence can’t access your iPod correctly. But once the multi-reboot process is done, everything will be alright. You will be able to install Apps & customise your iPod touch after that.

5, 6, 7, 8, wuhu…whuhuhu!

STEP 9: INSTALLING APPS

Installing apps is a simple matter of tapping the “Installer” icon, navigating to the “Install” option, and selecting your apps from various categories. Piece of cake. The reverse, Uninstalling Apps, is even simpler. Just navigate to the “Uninstall” option and pick the app you wish to remove from your iPod touch.

iphoneapps2321.jpg

You can get nearly all supported apps via the Installer while iPhone’s app such as Mail, Weather, Map, Notes, & Stocks have to be copied over from an iPhone. Installing them is simple as well. More about iPhone apps in this post.

FAQ:

  • Does jailbreaking void my warranty?

Yes, technically, but see Can I unjailbreak?

  • Can I unjailbreak?

Yes you can! Simply restore your iPod in iTunes. After that no one will know it was once jailbroken.

whenever i press Jailbreak!, it always says that it failed. I already tried restarting my computer a MILLION TIMES.

  1. the new ipod touch requires that you have itunes 7.5. and from what I heard, if you have 7.5, your procedure will not work.

What to do for the new ipod touch users?

    Mornin’ Mom,

I assume you meant tapping “AppSnap”? (Or maybe not since if AppSnap fails, there’s no message saying it failed. It just breaks out of Safari and return to the Home screen.)

Anyhoo, try another million times. But this time go to a public Wi-Fi hotspot to try it… like in a StarBuck. Yah, use somebody else’s ISP for the internet connection. Your ISP may, somehow, be … the cause of the problem.

    Good luck mom!

    Hey Jeremy,

My iTunes has been version 7.5 since the day I acquired my iPod touch. Hence everything I wrote about Jailbreaking that required iTunes is done on iTunes version 7.5 only.

So what you heard is not true.

But of course, we are talking about iTunes for Mac (I’m using Leopard, to be more specific) right? I dunno nuts about Windows.

I would assume it’s a hardware problem; your iPod touch could be defective. So give Apple a call. Tell them your iPod stopped working and when you tried to restore its software, the process failed miserably. I wouldn’t mention the “J” word though. :P

Before running jailbreak.jar, did you make sure your iTunes.app is not running? Quit everything else too, especially widgets & menulets that access your iTunes.

    Julie,

Is there a “Check for Update” button on top of the “Restore” button? Fiddle with the “Check for updates automatically” option in iTunes.app’s Preferences -> General.

Or maybe you can try relaunching iTunes.

You might want to turn off your iPod touch, disconnect it and re-boot your OS X. After restarting OS X, launch iTunes.app, turn on your iPod touch, and then connect it to your Mac.

    Gigja,

I’ve read the problem is caused by APE Haxie apps. Lots of people don’t like that stuff because it doesn’t conform to Mac’s stringent programming guidelines. You might have unknowingly installed one?

Uninstall those apps or re-boot into Safe Mode, and try running jailbreak.jar again.

Steve, maybe your Mac’s Java isn’t uo-to-date or somehow incomplete? Did you installed some third party Java thingy? Try removing them. To be frank, running the Jailbreak.jar on a Mac is the easiest part of the entire jailbreaking process! Trust me. I’ve done it many times and it’s really just a matter of clicking the “Jailbreak!” button (just make sure iTunes isn’t running.) May I suggest you perform steps 1 to 3 on your Mac first, then carry out Step 4 in a friend’s Mac.

Ok, after seeing all the posts here it is clear that some people are still having problems.

I did everything 5 times already with different versions of iTunes and different computers just as described nicely in the steps by Rupert, but I am still STUCK.

I downgraded to 1.1.1 and did the Oktoprep just fine, then as suggested, option_click to restore with the 1.1.2 restore.ipsw via iTunes, then I downloaded the jailbreak.jar and ran it.
As soon as I clicked on ‘Jailbreak!’ it gives me a warning/error: “Jailbreak failed …. This utility can only be used if you have already run OktoPrep before updating to 1.1.2″

I obviously have been very careful with the steps and really am confused as it seems that the Oktoprep I did is not recognized?

IF any of you have a similar experience please share it with me, I really dont know where I went wrong.

I’m having the same problem as niNO in reference to iTunes 7.6… I was trying to upgrade my sisters jailbroken ipod to 1.1.2 but after the jailbreak process is complete and the ipod has to reboot, iTunes prevents it from doing so and puts into recovery mode forcing you to start over… Just though I would share..

Btw. Does anyone know if I can still get itunes 7.5 somewhere so i can finally finish the jailbreak?

Here’s 7.5 for Mac, Chris G. Get it before it’s taken away.

Update: I forgot to tell you that with iTunes 7.6, you cannot upgrade to firmware 1.1.2. Having an iPod touch that is jailbroken in 1.1.1 is your only recourse. It is as good as a jailbroken 1.1.2 anyway. Really. The only thing you’ll miss, I believe, is the inability to add a new event in the iPod touch’s Calendar. That’s a small price to pay, I hope.

mike, which “last step” are you referring to? Step 4 is to run “Jailbreak.jar” and this java app doesn’t make you select any file. Step 3, however, will prompt you to select a file, in which case, you’ll select the 1.1.2 firmware file you downloaded, for it to read and upgrade your iPod touch.

Okay. RupertGee. I installed iTunes 7.5 again on my mac. Now here’s the prob. The iPod Touch is still in recovery mode everytime i boot it up. Okay. No biggie right? So I launch iTunes and hit restore and try to restore it to either of 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. (Right now I don’t care which one it is) and guess what? It won’t restore. It says there is an unknown error 1604. And so iTunes keeps continuing to say there is an ipod in recovery mode waiting to be restored. Does that mean it’s bricked?

So I use my windows xp (sp 2) computer also with iTunes 7.5 and try to restore. BAM. It lets me restore to either 1.1.1 or 1.1.2. Now here’s the part that’s making me mad. I unplug from the PC to replug into the Mac. The Mac now can’t recognize the iPod Touch!!! It makes a small “blip” sound and that’s all I get. So what gives? Is my iPod touch bricked?

I don’t want to use my iPod touch to sync to a Windows computer….because my entire library of music is on my macbook!

    HELP?

    Hello again, thebot.

Fact that your iPod touch behaves normally in your PC tells me it’s your Mac’s iTunes that is messed up. :( You mentioned you installed iTunes 7.5 again. I presume you had previously upgraded it to 7.6? I should tell you it’s not easy to downgrade back. If you look in your iTunes Library folder, you will find a relatively new folder named “Previous iTunes Libraries” with a file in it. That indicates the structure of 7.6 changed. Downgrading by re-installing 7.5 over and on top of 7.6 probably doesn’t revert the structural change, among other things.

My best advise to you is re-install 7.6, jailbreak again up to firmware version 1.1.1 and stay at 1.1.1.

But if you’re advanturous… fiddle with the “Previous iTunes Libraries” to see if you can somehow revert the structural change. Good luck.

Hey, yea I was so worried about my iPod touch being a brick, I called Apple support. Okay. Had to remove a bunch of files to get rid of iTunes crap.

Re-installed 7.6 iTunes and restored my Touch to 1.1.3. Now do I have the adventure to risk downgrading it to 1.1.1 and jailbreak it and keep it there?

From what I hear, Safari is unstable when jailbroken on 1.1.1. They also said 1.1.1 is just not stable in general…

Or I think I’ll wait for the 1.1.3 jailbreak to be released and see….

But honestly…on 1.1.3 it seems like it’s running much smoother…

I’ll be back RupertGee. You are still the man! Great site btw.

    Ha ha, thebot!

I didn’t know 1.1.1 is relatively unstable compared to 1.1.2.

hmmm… tell you what. Since you have a PC, just jailbreak your iPod touch all the way up to 1.1.2 in it. Since your PC’s iTunes doesn’t has your “real” iTunes Library, uninstalling iTunes 7.6 (and junk its library too) followed by installing a fresh copy of iTunes 7.5 with a brand new 7.5-only library should be easy.

A jailbroken iPod touch 1.1.2 is a jailbroken iPod touch 1.1.2 no matter how it was done.

Grin, and thanks for the complement.

hey rupert, would you know if right after jailbreak, installing BSD Subsytem and Open SSH is essential? i got those tips from my local mac users group. the others have used it… but the strange problem is that when i go to system category in installer, BSD Subsytem is not there… any ideas? tips?

    Hi tjm!

SSH is essential for me. I use it to take snapshots of the screen. But for most Mac users, AFPd is much easier to use to connect to the iPod touch, so SSH is really quite unnecessary. Sadly, most of us first installed SSH during Jailbreak. That copy of SSH cannot be easily uninstalled, nor turns itself off automatically while not in use. A far superior SSH is the OpenSSH package in the Installer. I suggest you read up o n it if you have a chance to not install the defacto SSH during Jailbreak. :)

BSD is one of the first package I install right after Jailbreaking. It’s essential for many popular apps, so perhaps there’s a momentary glitch in the server?

Hi RupertGee, I have a few questions.

    1. I currently have FW 1.1.1 and wanted to upgrade to 1.1.2. I tried it yesterday but it didnt seem to work. My ipod is showing the connect to itunes image, and itunes is telling me that my ipod is in recovery mode. What should i do? I dont know what to do so I restored it to FW 1.1.1 and jailbroke it again. Is that okay?

    2. Is it necessary to upgrade to 1.1.2? I only play games and listen to music.

    Thank you.

By not turning on, do you mean to say itunes detects your ipod in restore mode? If yes, I had the same problem, what I did was to update it back to FW 1.1.1 and jailbroke it again. I didnt bother updating to 1.1.2 anymore.

I think this provides a way to use OktoPrep to jailbreak 1.1.2 with iTunes 7.6. If you download the iTunes 7.5 installer, you can replace /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/MobileDevice.framework with the iTunes 7.5 MobileDevice.framework.

This allowed me to successfully jailbreak in 1.1.2 without getting rid of iTunes 7.6.

  6. well, it’s not that simple… just restore it again and no one will find out…. my 3 days old iPod touch is fucked now! can’t restore it anymore. Unknown error (1640)… hm… £174 down the toilet… i am so ‘excited’ (to say it nice) :o)

  7. Running INdependance when your iPod goes into recovery mode when it is supposed to finish jailbreaking (using itunes 7.6) actually works. Just run it, and it will probably tell you it cannot connect because it cannot find the baseband version, but it will somehow finish jailbreaking your ipod to 1.1.2

I am running iTunes version 7.6, and I am unable to upgrade to 1.1.2 At first it seemed ok, but I am getting annoyed trying to install simple things like customize and being unable to. My question is, if I were to upgrade with iTunes to 1.1.3 then follow the downgrade instructions, would I be able to jailbreak it back to 1.1.3 or should I just pray and wait till something better comes along?

    @armandaleg,

This is a long shot but did you reboot your iPod touch after you installed the BSD Sybsystem package? Failing to do so is the common reason for various strange problem.

If you did, then I suggest you restore your iPod touch to factory condition, using Apple’s recommended method. Doing so should remove all traces of various jailbreaking methods that may have left behind some files or modifications. Jailbreaking a fresh clean iPod touch should work properly after that.

Most users report failure to upgrade using iTunes 7.6. Can you do it on a Mac with iTunes 7.5? You dont need that Mac after jailbreaking… so you can just go to a friend for help.

As for your question… yes you definitely can downgrade from 1.1.3 and jailbreak to 1.1.3. I did that to mine many times, using the following instructions I wrote:

Rupert, I tried using my friends MAC with iTunes 7.5 but kept getting the same error stating that the orktop(sp) wasn’t installed, thus never jailbreaking 1.1.2.

So would you suggest I just upgrade to 1.1.3 then downgrade? Also I tried following your instructions but kept getting the same issue, unable to jailbreak 1.1.2, it is just frustrating and I don’t know what else to do now.

Apple released iTunes 7.6 after I wrote this post. Regretfully, you cannot use iTunes 7.6 to jailbreak to 1.1.2. With it, the furthest you can go is up to 1.1.1 only. Otherwise your iPod touch will be stuck at the Recovery Mode screen, no matter what.

To resolve your stuck iPod touch problem, follow iTunes’ instruction to restore it. That means it’ll be un-jailbroken.

After that, please follow the following new guide on jailbreaking:

I understand the most likely explanation for that, as experienced by others, is you have inadvetibly downloaded and used a firmware file meant for iPhone! :) If I were you, I’d get the right one (follow this guide) and re-jailbreak it. Who knows what other strange thing can happen?

  11. @Kevin:

No, you just have to add a new Source. On the bottom of the Installer, there should be a tab called “Sources”. In there, you have to click “Edit,” then “Add.” There, you have to add a source that contains those apps (I’m not sure of one that comes with them specifically for 1.1.2, but I think http://madpike05.googlepages.com/repo.xml should work). Then quit and re-enter the Installer, and you should be all set. They should be in one of the categories.
